Blood River drops cool visuals of 9 of its most important characters
Upcoming wuxia thriller Blood River is due to drop its first episodes on October 20th and I, for one, am beside myself with excitement as will anyone who loves the Dashing Youth and The Blood of Youth dramas as much as I do, as this one is another series that takes place in that same thrilling world.
For donghua fans, Blood River is also a live-action retelling of the same story you will be familiar with in the superb donghua series Tales of Dark River — the one about the assassins group who, in my opinion, are even more interesting than the Dashing Youth bunch.
For one thing, this group is much, much darker and edgier.
And, from the superb cast and the trailers that have dropped already, this one looks absolutely epic. (trailer below)

Along with the nine Blood River character visuals, which pop off the screen, YOUKU also confirmed the main cast, director and screenwriter (thankfully, the same one who the previous two dramas), and gave a spine-thrilling indication of what we can expect with its plot:
In the dark river, the rivers and lakes are stained with blood; before the sword reaches the body, the sound steals the soul first. #电影黑河传#
Exclusively broadcast on YOUKU. Blood River is waiting for you to join!
Leading Actor: Gong Jun
Chief Director: Yin Tao
Screenwriter: Zhou Mu Nan
Main Actor: Peng Xiao Ran
Special Star: Qiao Zhen Yu
Lead Actors: Chang Hua Sen, Yang Yu Tong, Snow Kong (aka Kong Xue Er) and Zhang Shi An
Guest Appearance: Geng Le
Special Appearance: Zhang Wei Na
Yep, as it should be, our boy Gong Jun is front and center in that crew, right?
Then again, this one is masterful casting as, if you are familiar with Su Mu Yu (aka Kui), either from the donghua or the novel its based on — Tales of Dark River (暗河传) by Zhou Mu Nan (周木楠) — I think you would be hard pressed to name anyone more appropriate.
Then again, from a cursory glance at the supporting names in its enormous cast, the casting director knew what they were doing there as well.

Blood River is scheduled to drop the first of its planned 40 episodes on Monday on YOUKU, and will release future episodes daily. And yep, it is 40 episodes, which means we should get to see this story in all its backstabbing glory, in depth and full of intrigue.
As an obsessive fan of the Tales of Dark River donghua (not ashamed to admit that, as confusing as I sometimes found it, I have rewatched it three times), I can hardly freaking wait! Can you?
