Fans just got some of the coolest promo visuals for a C-drama this year
We just got a slew of promo pieces dropping for Chen Du Ling and Zhou Yi Ran’s new drama Ashes to Crown (aka 翘楚), along with its premiere date — Tuesday, June 2nd, 2026. And yep, as expected, it will be streaming exclusively on YOUKU.
The promo pieces include what I think are some of the coolest character visuals we have had for a C-drama in a while, the best Ashes to Crown poster yet, and a new set of stills featuring the series’ main characters.
YOUKU also left a mysterious, but very intriguing, comment about the drama’s plot:
Holding the device to hold the power, gazing at the hidden game. The thousand-layer chess game is upside down, winning or losing is all in a moment.
Now, honestly, as I have said before, I can’t say I am that sold on the drama, at least yet, as the plot and the actors just seem more of the same. And God knows, we’ve been getting so many of these ‘general-themed’ dramas lately, I am feeling a little worn out.

That being said, and even though I dropped Veil of Shadows after Episode 6 as it was so poorly-written, one of the few standouts of that series (other than the gorgeous visuals) was Chen Du Ling’s performance.

An actress who I have found deathly dull since her bland portrayal of goddess Wen Xiao in Fangs of Fortune, but who pleasantly surprised me in VoS.

Chen Du Ling and Zhou Yi Ran mismatched in Ashes to Crown
All of that is to say Chen Du Ling’s involvement has definitely peaked my interest in Ashes to Crown, even though, in my opinion, she is completely mismatched with Zhou Yi Ran – an actor who is seven years her junior.
And before you start accusing me of being “ageist”, or one of those annoying C-drama fans always whittering on about “age gaps”, nope, that’s not me, as I couldn’t care less about an actor’s age. Especially when it comes to women.
However, to me at least, the problem with this pairing is Zhou Yi Ran is a much less mature actor than Chen Du Ling, as he’s one of those, unfortunately, many young Chinese actors who think being stern and stoic on screen gives their character heft.

It doesn’t, as was seen with his bland portrayal of Mu Qing Yan in the poorly-received Generation to Generation (which earned an abysmal 5.7 rating on Douban), another Chinese drama I also recently dropped.
Although that decision by me was more due to co-star Bao Shang En’s one-note performance, and the dull going-round-in-circles script, than anything Zhou Yi Ran did or didn’t do.
But… I am also not one of those people who makes a judgement about a drama before watching it. Particularly when it’s perfectly feasible Zhou Yi Ran could surprise me with his performance in Ashes to Crown, just like Chen Du Ling did in Veil of Shadows.
Onwards and upwards then, and we’ll see when the drama starts streaming, eh?

Ashes to Crown production details
The upcoming political intrigue-themed, historical romance drama is also only 24 episodes, which peaks my interest further, considering I already have about thirty-five 40-episode dramas still to finish.
It also features Tang Xiao Tian, who did a nice job in his main role in How Dare You? last year, Wang Rui Chang (A River Runs Through It), Gao Mao Tong (Shadow Love), and Wu Shi Le (Mysterious Lotus Casebook), so you can’t say Ashes to Crown‘s main cast isn’t mightily pretty either.

The YOUKU drama is also being directed by Yang Long, whose The Glory was well-received in 2025, and written by Li Min, who has both Rattan and The Legend of Fei under their belt, and Xia Meng Ying (Coming For You).
Let’s see what we get then, eh?
Until then, enjoy the poster, character visuals, stills and, oh yes, new trailer. It’s a nice little package of promotional visuals YOUKU has dropped that prove that, at the very least, the visuals in this one look to be on point.
