Veil of Shadows passes 10,000 on YOUKU heat index – fastest to do so in 2026

Veil of Shadows hits 10000 on heat index

As I predicted when the premiere date for Veil of Shadows was announced earlier in the week, the Chinese drama is now officially a huge success.

According to YOUKU, the Joseph Zeng and Ju Jing Yi-led drama has already exceeded 10,000 on their heat index with just eight episodes and a TVOD episode out so far.

That also means the Chinese fantasy wuxia drama is the fastest series to reach that milestone in 2026!

And, with 21 more episodes still to premiere for the streaming platform’s general audience (ie: not those willing to pay for TVOD), from the enormously positive viewer feedback I have seen all over the Internet so far (Chinese and international), I can guarantee you it will skyrocket much higher than that.

Two cool posters of the main and guest cast were also released to celebrate that, I have to admit, floated all my boats and got me even more excited for the rest of this amazing C-drama to drop.

Come on, one of them even features the main cast in chibi form! Awwwwww.

Veil of Shadows exceeds 10000 on YOUKU heat index

Why is Veil of Shadows such a fast success?

I can’t speak for everyone, or for every episode that has been released so far as I just finished watching Episode 5, but what I can say is director Edward Guo (Fangs of Fortune) has done a spectacular job with the script as it pulls you into the immaculately created fantasy world right from the first few seconds.

And I say that as someone who isn’t the biggest fan of Guo, or some of his past works, due to his annoyingly plagiaristic past and because he often has a problem with ‘style over substance’.

The performances of most of the main and guest actors are also on point, and the design, cinematography and production teams have outdone themselves in creating what has to be the most visually sumptuous C-drama of 2026 so far.

Add in that the absolutely epic main cast is stacked full of some of China’s most popular actors – including leads Joseph Zeng, Ju Jing Yi, Chen Du Ling, Tian Jia Rui and Yan An — and that the guest cast features some of, not only my favorite actors but millions of other folks’ faves as well (talking about you Wang Duo, Fan Shi Qi, Chang Hua Sen, and Chen Ruo Xuan), and it’s no wonder Veil of Shadows is packing a punch in the popularity department.

A massive number of viewer comments salivating over Veil of Shadows before it even began airing

Then again, I could also have predicted its success even before the C-drama’s first episode dropped as, 24 hours before that happened, the My Drama List page dedicated to the series already had over 12,000 comments, and counting, from fans desperate for its premiere to hit.

Those comments then stacked up so fast, I was practically getting whiplash while just leaving a comment because, as fast as I gave my opinion and hit ‘Post’, my comment had already disappeared far down the page never to be found again due to the avalanche of comments from other people.

Such is the popularity of actors like Joseph Zeng, Chen Du Ling and Wang Duo, eh?

From  the more than 120,000 new comments on the site since then (yep, the chatter about this thing is at insane levels, both internationally and in China), it’s also pretty obvious that the vast majority of viewers (and I would guess at least 95% of those commenting) are loving Veil of Shadows with a passion few C-dramas will ever achieve.

So, yep, color me not surprised Veil of Shadows has already climbed past 10,000 (10055, to be precise), and is still heading up from there. Congrats to everyone involved, eh?

The first episodes of the Chinese fantasy drama are streaming on YOUKU. and, if you are not a subscriber, you can watch the first two episodes without having to cough up a subscription.

As someone who wasn’t sure I would enjoy it after the first episode, then settled in for a straight binge-watch of the next four, I can say without a doubt, I think you will discover there isn’t much not to love.

If you end up remotely liking this thing, though, I would say it’s well worth the crazy cheap $3.59 discounted subscription cost YOUKU is currently charging for the first month, or even $10.49 for a quarter, or $28.99 for the first year.

You get access to boatloads of other Chinese dramas, donghua and variety shows on the streaming platform as well.
