C-drama drops celebratory poster of Xiao Jin Yu and Chu Chu
With the long-awaited The Imperial Coroner, Season 2 on its way later on today, being a huge fan of the first season of the historical mystery drama (because what an amazing ensemble main cast, eh?), I am thrilled to see Tencent Video announce Season 2 has earned 1.87 million reservations before it even starts.
That announcement of the heading-towards-2-million-pre-orders came from Tencent themselves via Weibo and their other social media accounts this morning.
The Chinese streaming platform also reminded their viewers The Imperial Coroner, Season 2 premieres today at 6pm (Beijing Time), and will drop new episodes every day at the same time after that.
With the Chinese mystery drama being scheduled to run for 28 episodes too (8 fewer than its first season), that means we will be getting investigations or new cases right through until close to the end of the month. Yay!
Tencent also commented about the relationship between the two leads who, you will remember, are now married to each other:
Solving a case together under the lamplight, uncovering the truth from subtle clues, and witnessing each other’s heartbeats!
The plot of The Imperial Coroner, Season 2
Just like the first season of The Imperial Coroner, the Chinese drama is based on the novel The Famous Detective’s Wife, which is written by Qing Xian Ya Tou.
Season 2 follows on from the first season as the now-married Prince An, Xiao Jin Yu, and his wife the imperial forensic examiner Chu Chu again work together, alongside the Three Judicial Offices, to solve some very mysterious cases.

All four main actors are back reprising their roles – that is Wang Zi Qi, Su Xiao Tong, Yang Ting Dong and Zhao Yao Ke — although, unlike Season 1, the latter two are currently listed as just having supporting roles, which is a bit odd?
Director Lou Jian (he also helmed Heroes) is returning to direct the second season, while screenwriter Qian Xiao Bai, who did a stellar job with its first season, also wrote the scripts.
The Imperial Coroner, Season 2 releases its first four episodes on Tencent today along with a fifth episode for viewers willing to pay for Express (that’s not me!), and with two more dropping tomorrow.
Let’s just say if this one is as consistent in quality and performances as Season 1, January will have just gotten even better for me as, man, I love these characters. How about you?
Meanwhile, if you are a big fan of historical-themed Chinese detective dramas and have not yet watched Season 4 of the hit series Strange Tales of Tang Dynasty, which is (strangely) called Strange Chronicles of Tang, you should also give that one a watch as, in my opinion, while it isn’t as good as Season 3, it’s still an incredibly fun watch.
