Right as the first episodes of The Imperial Coroner, Season 2 were released by Tencent Video on Thursday, character posters for the main cast were also uploaded to the Chinese streaming service’s social media accounts.
The posters were dropped as Tencent also gave viewers a heads up about what we can expect in the new season of the historical mystery series, as all four of Season 1’s main leads are back for Season 2.
They said:
When the hand that moves the chess pieces is hidden behind the fog, the people of the Three Judicial Offices become the most crucial pieces on the board.
Will they resign themselves to being pawns, or will they break the deadlock and become players?
A contest of intellect, courage, and faith has already begun…
The main cast was also re-confirmed:
- Xiao Jin Yu is played by Wang Zi Qi
- Chu Chu is played by Su Xiao Tong
- Jing Yi is played by Yang Ting Dong
- Leng Yue is played by Zhao Yao Ke
- You Chen An is played by Zhang Chen Xiao
Of course, anyone who has already watched Season 1 of The Imperial Coroner (and why would you be watching Season 2 if you haven’t?) already knows the C-drama is chockful of cool cases, lots of palace intrigue and a fair number of villains, all out to do whatever they can to destroy the lives of the folks from the Three Judicial Offices.
Chances are then, we will be getting more of the same with, from what I heard, even higher production values.
What can we expect from the plot of The Imperial Coroner 2?
As for the plot of the second season of The Imperial Coroner, as you’ll remember Xiao Jin Yu and Chu Chu are now married, so this is how WeTV describes the story:
The Imperial Coroner 2 follows the married life of the cool and composed Prince An, Xiao Jinyu, and the imperial forensic examiner Chu Chu.
With careers, relationships, and ambitions all taken to the next level, they join forces with the young talents of the Three Judicial Offices to uncover the truth behind mysterious cases and work together to safeguard peace in the Tang Dynasty.
In other words, more intriguing cases that are nicely solved, more palace intrigue, more cute and humorous conversations between the four leads, and more fun.
And I don’t know about you but, as historical mystery dramas with a detective-theme go, the first season of this one is one of the most highly underrated in its genre as far as I am concerned.
That’s why I am hoping Season 2 will grab a little more attention.
Especially as The Imperial Coroner is a much better series than the similar Coroner’s Diary, which was released late last year and was poorly written and acted, yet surpisingly performed better in the ratings.
Although, and rightfully so, The Imperial Coroner did receive a much higher Douban score.
