The trailer for upcoming Chinese historical romance drama The Road to Splendor has been released via Tencent Video’s YouTube channel this week.
The Road to Splendor stars Ding Yu Xi (Love Game in Eastern Fantasy) and Ancy Deng (Melody of Golden Age), with Fan Shi Ran (Derailment), Dong Zi Fan (Revenge of Reborn Princess) and Zhang Meng (The Double) in supporting roles.
The C-drama is directed by Deng Ke who, some netizens have commented, can be a problem director.
But, problem director or not (and don’t believe everything you read online), he certainly gets results with big hits like The Prisoner of Beauty, Guardians of the Dafeng, My Heroic Husband and The Legend of Shen Li under his belt already.
Nan Zhen, who wrote The Prisoner of Beauty and The Romance of Tiger and Rose, is the C-drama’s screenwriter. So, yep, you can guarantee this is high up on my ‘Must Watch’ list, isn’t it on yours?
An official premiere date for the Chinese drama has not yet been announced. (Update: Rumor coming out of China currently says we are likely to see the first episodes of the C-drama arriving in July, 2026. Well, I am keeping my fingers crossed, aren’t you?)
What is the The Road to Splendor plot?
As for the The Road to Splendor plot, it looks like this:
The young lady Fu Tingyun (played by Ancy Deng) comes from a wealthy family, but her marriage is treated by her clan as a means to climb the social ladder.
During marriage negotiations, she is falsely accused of having an affair with her cousin, tarnishing the family’s reputation and leading to her facing the harshest punishment.
In desperation, Fu Tingyun turns to Zhao Ling (played by Ding Yu Xi), a salt smuggler she encounters by chance, and the two embark on a journey of escape together.
With her wit and courage, Fu Ting Yun successfully obtains evidence of corruption by local salt administration officials, helping Zhao Ling gain the favor of the Crown Prince, who is traveling incognito.
She persuades Zhao Ling to join the military and, under the guise of being his fiancée, assists him in supporting the Crown Prince, securing his standing in the imperial court.
Meanwhile, Fu Ting Yun never gives up on uncovering the truth behind the false accusations against her. With the help of righteous allies, she and Zhao Ling gather evidence from multiple sources.
The just-released The Road to Splendor trailer doesn’t tell us anything about the plot. It just gives us a quick look at the main leads in costume and, yes, WeTV uploaded it at 480p. (What can you do, eh?)
