Yang Zi and Ou Hao confirmed as leads for The Way You Come Back
You will be happy to know, after much speculation (and gossip!) about who would be the male lead in the upcoming historical life-themed drama The Way You Come Back alongside female lead Yang Zi, it has now been announced Ou Hao will be taking that lead.
That confirmation was made earlier today via Tencent Video’s social media accounts along with posters of each of the two actors.
Ou Hao’s poster has the 33-year-old actor wearing a suit and in a three-quarter turn towards the camera, whereas Yang Zi’s poster has the also-33-year-old actress also dressed nicely but with her back to the camera and her body predominantly in darkness.
Tencent also confirmed The Way You Come Back began filming today, with the 36-episode series currently scheduled for a late 2026/early 2027 premiere.
Yang Yang confirmed as director of The Way You Come Back
Along with the production company/streaming service also confirming female director Yang Yang (The Immortal Ascension) as the director of the female-centric drama, they also commented on Yang Zi’s poster:
Despite the vicissitudes of life, its youthful beauty remains unchanged; even in adversity, the magnolia blossoms still bloom.
while on Ou Hao’s visual, they said:
Once a pioneer of the revolution, now a lonely figure in the mortal world.
The plot of The Way You Come Back
The Chinese drama, also known as Magnolia Blossoms, May You Return in Chinese, is based on the true life story of Dong Zhu Jun (董竹君).
She was born in 1900, sold into prostitution by her family as a teenager, and went on to become a modern Chinese female entrepreneur, a pioneer of the women’s rights movement, and the founder of the now-famous Jinjiang Hotel in Shanghai.
She was also an early supporter of the CCP.
The drama’s plot, which is a full-on pro-CCP story (don’t care, it looks fascinating) looks like this:
Young A Yuan, born into a poor family, is sold to a high-end brothel as a singer. She helps the revolutionary Xia Zhishi evade arrest and falls in love with him. After the two hold a wedding in Shanghai, they travel east to Japan to study, and she takes a new name—Dong Zhujun.
Four years later, Dong Zhujun returns with Xia Zhishi to his hometown in Sichuan and becomes the governor’s wife. Behind the glamour, however, lie her husband’s coldness and suspicion. Dong Zhujun takes her four daughters back to Shanghai and begins a new life once again.
She establishes the Jinjiang Sichuan Restaurant and the Jinjiang Teahouse. Using her businesses as cover, she provides shelter to Communist Party members. At the same time, she runs a magazine and a printing house to promote Communist ideals.
After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, Dong Zhujun hands the two Jinjiang establishments over to the state, where they are expanded into the Jinjiang Hotel.
There is no word yet on the rest of The Way You Come Back‘s cast but, now that the drama has officially begun filming, that will likely be announced soon.
Meanwhile, in a recent interview, Yang Zi explained that, before filming, she had gone to visit the grave of Dong Zhujun, who died in 1997 at the age of 97, and asked for her permission to play her life.
It appears she must have been granted it.
Then again, when you look at Yang Zi’s stellar work in dramas like Immortal Samsara (both seasons), Lost You Forever (both seasons), Flourished Peony and its prequel In the Name of Blossom, it would be difficult to find another actress better suited, wouldn’t it?
