Yet another General and Princess story
Chen Zhe Yuan and Zhang Jing Yi’s new historical mystery drama Chasing Dreams has a new poster out of the main leads as Tencent Video announces it has earned 1.5 million pre-orders so far.
No news about the drama’s premiere is forthcoming but, with the high level of promo pieces releasing over the last month, and it being a year since Chasing Dreams wrapped filming, my guess is it will not be long.
Chasing Dreams gives me mediocre and been-there vibes
Now, personally, this is not one of the Chinese dramas I have on my watchlist anymore, although I will probably give it a quick glance when it premieres just to see if it is anything different than the usual fare we get every other week.
My reticence is due to having watched/attempted to watch a few dramas starring the main leads after having initially been excited with the looks of Chasing Dreams, and being disappointed with their performances in most.
Chen Zhe Yuan, who is adequate but was more of a caricature of a character than the actual man in the recent Fated Hearts (although that script had major problems and the female lead was an annoyance (the character not the actress), and Zhang Jing Yi, who was brilliant in Blossoms in Adversity, but has been just more of the same in most of her dramas I have watched since then.
Whether the rest of the cast — Liang Yong Qi, who has given decent performances in The Double and Feud, Lu Qi, who also appeared in Blossoms in Adversity and always seems to be a bit bland to me, Tania Chan who is a bit-part actress up until very recently, and Chen Cheng, who is another not-too-experienced performer — can bring anything of substance to the table, we will see.
So far, though, nothing about this gives me Must Watch vibes to me. Especially as it’s yet another General and Princess romance and one that, this time, involves that dreaded and utterly loathed love triangle.
Except, maybe, that it’s directed by Lost You Forever‘s Yang Huan, and the trailer is pretty, so it does deserve a cursory look.
Let’s see what we get when it drops then, eh? Hopefully, I will be pleasantly surprised.
