Strange Chronicles of Tang (aka Season 4 of Strange Tales of Tang Dynasty) gets 6 gorgeous ‘mask’ character posters
Fans of the Chinese drama franchise Strange Tales of Tang Dynasty have had a bumper 2025, with Season 3 releasing in November, a vertical mini-series spin-off – Strange Chronicles of Tang: The Chang’an Detective – premiering all 56 episodes on November 23rd, and now Season 4 of the series dropping on December 17th.
Throw in Season 3 of the series also won Best Drama at the Asian Academy Creative Awards earlier this month, and 2025 has been an excellent year for the cast as well.
As for Season 4, according to iQIYI, it is more of a mini-series than what we’re used to seeing from Strange Tales of Tang Dynasty. It also features a different director. Again. (See bottom of article)
The latest season is titled Strange Chronicles of Tang, comprises 21 episodes of 20 minutes each, and stars the same six main leads as its previous seasons — Yang Xu Wen, Yang Zhi Gang, Gao Si Wen, Chen Chuang, Sun Xue Ning and Anson Shi.
All of whom also got some pretty gorgeous character posters dropping today that feature each actor holding a golden mask.
To give fans the thrill of anticipation, iQIYI also commented:
A fog shrouds Chang’an, a phantom lurks in the hearts of men; the mystery remains unsolved, and another twist of fate unfolds. How will everyone unravel the threads and glimpse the light of day?
The plot of Strange Chronicles of Tang
Strange Chronicles of Tang is apparently meant to be a bridge between the events of Season 3 and those of the upcoming Season 5 (no word yet on what form that will take — full or mini drama, we don’t know?)
Like the first three seasons, the shorter drama features our favorite six attempting to solve two cases. Here’s what we know about the plot so far:
The series unfolds tales of mysterious cases from the Tang Dynasty through the two cases of “The Soothe Shop” (can also be translated as “The Shop of Relief”)” and “The Omen Palace Song (aka “The Song of the Palace of Calamity”).
“The Soothe Shop” delves into the secrets of the nobility in Chang’an, unearths hidden intrigues of the imperial court, and focuses on the inner worlds and pasts of the characters.
“The Omen Palace Song” directly addresses the rigid hierarchical clan system of the Tang Dynasty and cleverly connects to the cultural narrative of the subsequent fifth season, “Strange Tales of the Tang Dynasty: The Shu Road.”
So, basically, we will get two new cases solved over 21 shorter episodes, and a nice set up for Season 5 of the series — Strange Tales of the Tang Dynasty: The Shu Road.
Heck, I am not complaining. Are you?
Production details for Strange Chronicles of Tang
Strange Chronicles of Tang is directed by Guo Shi Min ( 郭世民) who also directed the short series Kan Jian Ming Yun De Shao Nv (aka The Girl Who Saw Fate), so neither Season 1 and 2 director Bai Shan or Season 3 director Ju Xing Mao is involved in this one.
It is, however, still written by Wei Feng Hua, the same writer who wrote all three seasons and the spin-off, so at least there is some consistency with that.
iQIYI will be streaming all 21 episodes starting on December 17th, and with new episodes releasing daily. Just the right time for me to download the first few before I board a flight for the United States on the same day.
Well, now I am looking forward to my trip. 🙂
