As a huge fan of the 2021 Chinese drama The Imperial Coroner, I am absolutely ecstatic to see the news released via Tencent’s Weibo account today re: The Imperial Coroner, Season 2.
No, sadly, we still don’t have a premiere date, but the good news is that, when the C-drama eventually drops, it’s looking like it could be incredibly popular as Tencent is now reporting the number of reservations for it have already exceeded 500,000.
In celebration of that goal, they also released a new The Imperial Coroner, Season 2 visual along with a cute comment thanking fans for their support:
Let’s join hands and protect the peace of our country. Having you by our side is our greatest confidence.
As you might expect, the poster features Xiao Jinyu (played by Wang Zi Qi) and Chu Chu (Su Xiao Tong), with both looking as close as ever.
A short celebratory video for the 500,000 reservations was also released featuring all four main cast (see photo at the top of this article. Cute, right?).
Production details for The Imperial Coroner, Season 2
As is usual with dramas out of China until right before they drop, there isn’t a huge amount of information about its upcoming Season 2 as yet.
Nor any information about when a distribution license will be awarded.
We do know the main cast from Season 1 is back for Season 2, which will be interesting as anyone who watched the first season knows it had a closed ending plot. So, where those characters will go from here then is anyone’s guess.
Director Lou Jian (楼健) is also back directing Season 2, with Qing Xian Ya Tou, the author of the original novel the C-drama is based on, also back writing the scripts for the second season.
The Imperial Coroner, Season 2 began filming on September 19th, 2024, and wrapped up production on November 28th.
Character posters for the four main cast members also dropped back in January.
