Even though Liu Xue Yi and Tan Song Yun’s Against the Current is still being filmed, that has not stopped Tencent Video from already starting its promotion of the upcoming historical romance drama.
A series that, if my sense is correct, is so epic, it will be one of Tencent’s most promoted of the year once it releases.
That promotion has already included the C-drama’s first trailer, which dropped a couple of weeks ago, and several posters and, like I said, we are still filming.
Today, the streaming service’s latest promotion arrives in the form of Against the Current behind-the-scenes photos being released via Tencent’s Weibo account.

A great way to rev up excitement for the Chinese drama, with my only complaint being that, out of 14 BTS photos, only two of them feature Liu Xue Yi. Bah!
One does feature the marvelous Li Meng, though, (below), so thank you for small mercies, eh?

Those 14 Against the Current BTS photos also came with a comment from Tencent saying:

It’s the start of autumn! A single leaf falls, and we know autumn has arrived; the summer heat fades as the osmanthus-scented breeze slowly rises.
On the film set, sleeves brush past bamboo shadows, inkstones glisten with morning dew, and the actors’ eyes hold untold tales of seasons past. Their lines seem to carry an ancient charm.
A set of Lan Xiang Ru Gu plogs to welcome autumn~ Begone, scorching heat!#EarlyBirdPrepPlan#
With Against the Current still filming, and a typical historical romance drama taking between a year and two years to be released after filming is complete, yes, it will be a while before we see Liu Xue Yi’s latest drama.
Update: As of April, 2026, we still do not have a premiere date for this one. Come on, Tencent. Stop with the teasing!

My big hope about Against the Current, though, is let’s just hope it is much better written and acted than his recently-ended latest drama The Princess’s Gambit, eh? (Not his acting, his co-star’s)
As saying that was “disappointing” is an understatement. and poor Liu Xue Yi deserves so much better than that.
