Chinese mystery crime thriller The Punishment has released character stills as the C-drama gets ready to premiere its first episodes today, December 25th on iQIYI.
The seven The Punishment character stills feature lead actors Johnny Huang, Eric Wang, and Liang Jie, guest actors Li You Bin, Sa Ri Na, Zhang Tong and special guest star Qin Jun Jie in visuals that show off the grittiness of the upcoming crime series.
A new poster for the drama was also released on iQIYI’s social media accounts, with the Chinese streaming service commenting about its intriguing plot:
Holding a torch to pierce the darkness, entering the game to seek the truth. Undercurrents surge in Hanzhou City, with a silent struggle between good and evil.
As all faces gradually emerge, and the choice between emotion and law is presented, the truth remains hidden in the mist.
The drama, which is connected to the 2022 series Chasing the Undercurrent, is known as Chasing the Undercurrent II in China.
While director Tian Yi is back directing the second season, and Liu Hong Yan returned to write scripts, Johnny Huang is the only actor from the first season who is back in a main role, while former leads Cheng Yu and Li You Bin are now supporting cast.
Interestingly, however, while several actors are returning from Chasing the Undercurrent, they play completely different characters.

In other words, if you haven’t watched the previous drama, there is no reason to think you will not understand this one as it features a standalone story and new characters.
