Tencent Video released a new visual for recently-ended C-drama Reborn this morning, celebrating the fact that Reborn has debuted on Douban with a 7.1 out of 10 rating.
Douban, of course, is the Chinese online data base that is similar to IMDB in that its users (over 200 million of them and comprising both viewers and drama critics) rate C-dramas, movies, donghua etc. Like most of Chinese media, it is is censored, with opinions and other information often removed.
Douban administrators, however, are quite good at monitoring the site’s ratings, with instances of mass down-rating or up-rating by troll groups or paid users quickly being removed.
That means, overall, they are much more reliable than western sites like IMDB or My Drama List, which still have an unmonitored troll groups problem.
Anyway, I will get back to Reborn being initially rated a 7.1 on Douban, so…
What does Reborn‘s initial 7.1 rating mean?
Of course, Reborn‘s initial rating is nowhere near the heights of the platform’s highest-rated Chinese dramas.
Dramas like the 1986 drama Journey to the West, which is currently the platform’s highest-ever rated drama at 9.7 out of 10, or 2019’s The World Between Us at 9.4, 2014’s Battle of Changsha at 9.1, or Bai Yu’s 2020 drama The Long Night at 9.1.
But, with Reborn grabbing a 7.1 out of 10 on Douban, as ratings go for youth dramas, it is still a very solid score.
Of course, that rating will likely go up or down, depending on how many hardcore fans initially rated it, and what general audiences think about it as time goes on.
For now, however, the cast and crew should be happy with that outcome.

Chinese drama Reborn stars Zhang Jing Yi (female lead of Blossoms in Adversity), Zhou Yi Ran (ML of Generation to Generation) and Liu Dan.
It premiered on Tencent Video and on WeTV, Viki and iQIYI depending on where you’re located, on June 19th and ran through June 28th, 2025 with all 23 episodes now streaming on all platforms.
