To break a curse and become mortal, Lu Qianqiao of the War Ghost clan must endure five brutal trials: changing his skin, flesh, bones, blood, and heart.
Assuming a false identity, he enters a contract marriage with Xin Mei, a cultivator rumored to be a “husband-killer” destined for widowhood. Their plan is simple: marry for mutual benefit and part ways afterward.
However, their fates become dangerously intertwined when Xin Mei seeks revenge on Lu Qianqiao’s behalf, drawing the unwanted attention of the immortal sects.
Exposed and hunted, the two must join forces to survive. Through crisis and redemption, they grow from reluctant allies to devoted partners, ultimately rising to protect the world together.

Production & Adaptation Notes
Screenwriter: Zhao Na (赵娜), known by her pen name Xiao Xiang Dong Er (潇湘冬儿), served as Head Screenwriter.
Original Novel: Based on the novel Perfect Couple (佳偶天成) by Shi Si Lang (十四郎).
Director-Writer-Actor Connection: Director Guo Hu previously worked with lead actor Ren Jialun on the hit drama One and Only (周生如故). The screenwriter, Xiao Xiang Dong Er, previously adapted A Moment but Forever, and wrote Princess Agents and Rebirth.
Shared Universe: Fate Chooses You and another Xianxia drama, A Moment but Forever (念无双), are set in the same fictional universe (both adapted from novels by Shi Si Lang and written by Xiao Xiang Dong Er.
Major Adaptations from the Original Novel
- In the novel, the female lead Xin Mei is an ordinary mortal, not a cultivator.
- The main leads’ first meeting in the novel is more forceful and antagonistic, whereas the drama reworks it into a more equal “marriage of convenience” arrangement.
- The original story is a light-hearted, sweet romance. The drama version has been retooled into a darker more fate-driven epic Xianxia with stronger themes of heroism and justice.
Key Highlights
- Fate vs. Free Will: The drama explores whether love can overcome destiny, as both leads are burdened by curses and prophecies.
- Physical Transformation Arc: Ren Jialun’s character undergoes dramatic physical trials (“changing bones, flesh, and heart”), which fans have compared to his iconic “bone-removal” scene in One and Only — though the director notes this time it is a struggle for survival rather than a tragic sacrifice.
- Contract Marriage Trope: A popular romantic setup where two strangers marry for practical reasons, only to develop genuine feelings amid danger and discovery.
