Chinese war-themed drama Man’s Inhumanity to Man (aka Inhuman Atrocities) premiered on YOUKU on Saturday but, sadly, without English subtitles.

Two days later, and subs are still not forthcoming, which means the C-drama will receive little attention outside China, and that’s a shame as, from the trailer and the stills, this one, although gut-wrenchingly horrific and sad, looks incredible. (Update: YOUKU has finally added AI-generated English subtitles that are quite good, so Yay!)

YOUKU did release several Man’s Inhumanity to Man character posters and stills promoting the drama but, again, only in China. Grrrrrr.

All I can ask is when will Chinese production companies/streaming companies decide the rest of the world watching Chinese dramas is just as important as the people at home?

Especially when the subject matter of a C-drama is as important as this one?

Along with the stills, which show off the drama’s beautiful cinematography, YOUKU also commented about the Chinese historical drama’s story:

Beneath the weighty serial numbers lies irrefutable evidence of crimes, an unforgettable past. The truth will never be silent, and atrocities have nowhere to hide!

C-drama Man’s Inhumanity to Man plot

The plot, which is based on historical evidence of crimes committed by Unit 731 of the Japanese Imperial Army during its invasion of China in 1936 through the end of the war in 1945, is described like this by one Chinese website:

The drama adopts a dual narrative structure.

One timeline tells the story of Xiao Jin, a staff member of the Harbin Museum of Evidence of Crimes Committed by Unit 731 of the Japanese Imperial Army, who embarks on a decades-long transnational evidence-gathering journey starting in 1992.

The other timeline returns to Harbin during the Japanese invasion of China, and through the perspectives of several people involved, it profoundly exposes the cruel human experiments and inhumane atrocities committed by Unit 731 of the Japanese Imperial Army.

Man’s Inhumanity to Man was released on December 13th, which is the day the 12th National Memorial Day for the Victims of the Nanjing Massacre fell on.

It is directed by Lao Suan (Cloud Prison), and stars Jiang Qi Lin, Zhang Yu, Yin Zheng, Lan Xi Ya, Han Jing, and Jiang Qi Ming, with its 20 episodes scheduled to air through December 20th.

Now, keep your fingers crossed that we will eventually get English subtitles.
