Love and Crown jumps from 6,500 to 9,000 quickly
Seven episodes of the new Allen Ren and Peng Xiao Ran drama Love and Crown are now out on YOUKU, and the C-drama has already exceeded 9,000 on the platform’s heat index, after hitting 6,500 on its first day.
Considering 10,000 means a drama is a certifiable mega-hit on YOUKU, and Love and Crown has grabbed 9,000 already (meaning = very successful), yep, it appears the historical drama is likely to be one of YOUKU’s biggest successes this year. (Look at viewer comments below before making up your mind, though)
Then again — Allen Ren AND Peng Xiao Ran — so not entirely surprising, right?
As they always do when a drama hits a certain point, YOUKU has also released a new visual featuring the two main leads, and commented:
#Love and Crown premieres today# Congratulations for surpassing 9000 in popularity!
I’m actually enjoying both the angst and the sweet moments (cross that out), how about you?
Let’s cheer on Xiao Huan (aka Ren Jia Lun) and Ling Cang Cang (Peng Xiao Ran) as they find their way back to each other!
Social media divided about the cast and the script of Love and Crown
Comments about the Chinese romance drama on social media and in online forums, however, are mixed so far.
Some people love the main leads but hate the script (To be honest, I have not begun watching Love and Crown yet, but it is written by the same screenwriter as Sword and Beloved, and I detested where that script ended up so….), while others don’t find the script as poor as those complaining.
Comments so far range from the very simple from one MDL user:
Good cast bad writing.
to another who apparently did not enjoy Episode 1, and doesn’t like Episode 2 any better:
Sadly even episode 2 isn’t any better….. the drastic change between the quite dark first episode and this fluffy second episode doesn’t work well. Also the flashback feels like a bunch of nonsense and the fight scene … especially when the kid came in looked so bad.
while one Chinese viewer on Weibo compliments Allen Ren’s performance so far:
Ren Jialun possesses superb acting skills, accurately grasping the character’s personality traits and emotional changes, and has brought the character to life so well. In period dramas, he always quickly immerses himself in the role, perfectly matching the temperament and spirit of the ancient figures.
and another says:
Many people hated Miu Wen Jing’s script for Sword and Beloved but, for me, it had a suitable ending. Let’s see how they manage this one then, but so far so good.
Overall, after reading a slew of comments, both from international viewers and those in China, I would say the jury is still out on how Love and Crown will end up with its audience.
A legitimately big hit, or one that people slowly drift away from as the writing worsens? I will keep you posted.
