Why One Day in July is Worth Watching
One Day in July offers a fresh and meta twist on the webtoon-adaptation genre. Based on the popular webtoon July Found by Chance by Moo Ryoo – the same source material that inspired the beloved K-drama Extraordinary You – this Chinese adaptation brings a new flavor to the story while retaining its clever, fourth-wall-breaking premise.
The drama stands out for several reasons:
A Unique Premise. Unlike typical transmigration stories where a modern person falls into a book, here the protagonist is already a marginal character inside a manga – and she discovers her own impending death is written into the plot just to save the heroine. What happens when a background character refuses to accept her disposable fate? Guess we’ll find out.
A Shocking Twist. Thirteen’s deal with A Qi comes with an unexpected condition: he asks her to kill him. This dark, mysterious element adds layers of intrigue and emotional complexity to what could have been a straightforward survival story.
Talented Leads. Shen Yue (A Love So Beautiful, Meteor Garden) brings her signature charm and emotional depth to the role of A Qi, a character fighting against her own narrative. Edward Chen, acclaimed for his performance in The First Frost, takes on the enigmatic role of Thirteen – an awakened “NPC” who can predict the future but carries his own hidden agenda.
A World at War with Itself. When A Qi and Thirteen’s actions trigger a collective awakening among other characters, the comic world’s system turns against them, pouring all its power into hunting down the “bugs.” The stakes escalate from personal survival to a full-scale rebellion against the narrative itself.
Fans of Extraordinary You, W: Two Worlds Apart, Lost Romance, or any story that dares to break the fourth wall will find much to love in One Day in July.
