The Princess’s Gambit’s Shen Zai Ye (aka Liu Xue Yi) exceeds 100 million character popularity points as C-drama ends

Shen Zaiye aka Liu Xue Yi hits 100 million popularity points

Shen Zai Ye, the male lead character in the just-ended Chinese romance drama The Princess’s Gambit has exceeded 100 million character popularity points on Tencent Video.

This up from the 10 million points Shen Zai Ye had earned just a couple of days after the Chinese drama premiered back in June. (A pretty celebratory poster was released for that milestone as well).

A celebratory poster of actor Liu Xue Yi as Left Chancellor Shen Zai Ye has been released by Tencent along with the comment:

#Liu Xue Yi’s Role as Shen Zai Ye Surpasses 100 Million in Popularity#

“A lone wolf dominating the winds, holding the reins of the court’s power.”
Congratulations to Prime Minister Shen (@Mr_刘学义) for surpassing 100 million character popularity points!

Now, I could not get passed Episode 28 of The Princess’s Gambit before dropping it, as the writing, the convoluted plot and Meng Zi Yi’s performance throughout are so poor.

Meng Zi Yi in particular is abysmally bad in this, and it wasn’t just me who thought that as a huge number of the Chinese viewers watching it hated it as well. (Update: I did finally finish the drama, but Ye Gods, as much as I love Liu Xue Yi, those last 10 episodes were a monumental struggle).

But, if you have not yet begun watching The Princess’s Gambit and are, like me, a Liu Xue Yi super fan, you should at least give it a try.

Along with the beautiful cinematography, the Chinese actor is the only standout of most of the drama, does his usual superb job in his role as the mysterious lone wolf Shen Zai Ye, and is, thus, well deserving of the points his character has just earned.

Let’s just hope then that he gets better scripts from here on out, eh?

If that then is enough for you, and your patience is better than mine, all 36 episodes of the Chinese historical romance drama are now streaming on WeTV internationally. Have at it.
