Four months after distribution license approved, The Guilty finally gets its premiere

I was surprised to see Wei Da Xun and Sun Qian’s new mystery thriller The Guilty premiere on iQIYI today, while also dropping character visuals for its main cast at the same time.

It’s a drama we have been waiting for for quite a while, considering it finished filming in December, 2024 and was then awarded its distribution license in early September last year.

But, over four months later, and we still didn’t have a peep from iQIYI as to when we could expect it to drop.

But, all of a sudden, here we finally are, with The Guilty character visuals being released today via iQIYI’s social media, along with a comment from the Chinese streaming platform, while the C-drama’s first four episodes dropped on iQIYI.

iQIYI’s comment is a hint about the drama’s plot:

Three mysterious cases are shrouded in mist, and people’s hearts waver between good and evil. Some uphold their principles for love, while others cross boundaries because of hatred.

When all clues point back to the origin, who is the true mastermind?

Production details for Chinese drama The Guilty

The drama is pretty short compared to most, as it clocks in at just 14 episodes of around 45 minutes each.

Personally, that makes it even more appealing to me as, with so many Chinese dramas to watch, it is nice to occasionally get one that doesn’t require a commitment of a couple of weeks of full-on viewing time, isn’t it?

The C-drama, which is titled 有罪之身 in China and is part of iQIYI’s Light On series, is chief directed by Fu Dong Yu (In the Name of Justice) and directed by Wang Tao Tao (Love Again).

It stars the previously mentioned Wei Da Xun (A Love Never Lost), Sun Qian (Legend of the Magnate), Wang Zhen Er (Twelve Days), Wang Long Zheng (The Narcotic Operation), and Gao Zhi Ting (The Litchi Road), with a support cast that features Wu Gang (Joy of Life), Li Chuan Ying (The Seven Relics of Ill Omen), and Zhang Fan (Swords into Ploughshares).

iQIYI’s intriguing plot synopsis goes like this:

The drama unfolds around a passionate man who hides his crimes to protect his first love and a middle-aged detective seeking redemption by uncovering a brutal truth. A single fatal mistake. An explosion that takes thirteen lives. Two cases that appear entirely unrelated become entwined through the fates of three young people.

Across a decade-long journey of investigation and redemption, a buried truth slowly emerges, exposing a shocking secret at the heart of it all.

The Guilty is streaming its first four episodes on iQIYI now, with more releasing tomorrow (Thursday).
Enjoy the C-drama’s character visuals, and give the drama a go.
Frustratingly, at least to me, it does not seem to be particularly popular with international viewers so far, as just 300 people have listed it as “watching” on My Drama List but, as you will likely know if you watch enough dramas, that does not mean it isn’t interesting.
