With 2026 being a stellar year for wuxia dramas, I am happy to report we have another one on the way and it’s Yang Yang’s Zhan Zhao Adventures, the same wuxia series I predicted would be dropping in mid-May on Wednesday.
And, yes, it’s another Chinese drama with a bland English title, but you can’t have everything, eh?
The Chinese drama’s premiere date of May 13th was just announced by YOUKU along with a new poster of leads Yang Yang, Zhang Ruo Nan and Alen Fang celebrating that the drama has now earned 3 million reservations — which is massively up from the 2 million that was announced just two days ago.
YOUKU has also given us a slew of character posters for all the drama’s lead and main supporting characters and a full main cast poster (all down below) and, yep, as you would expect, they are gorgeously designed.
Unfortunately, it does look like YOUKU international may not be streaming this, at least in all regions, so some of you may be stuck watching it on Disney+, who announced back in December that they had acquired licensing for it.
Here in Europe at least, Viki has just confirmed Zhan Zhao Adventures will be streaming on their platform and that satisfies me a lot more than Disney+, a company I detest.
I will keep you in the loop as more information about the Chinese drama’s international release comes out for other regions.
Meanwhile, the Zhan Zhao Adventures character visuals are hella pretty, and the drama itself, being a classic wuxia, sounds like my kind of thing.
Then again, after Yang Yang did such an incredible job as Han Li in The Immortal Ascension, just about anything the man stars in is on my watch list.
Even if its plot isn’t all that, and this one’s certainly is.

Why Zhan Zhao Adventures should be a standout wuxia this year
Let’s face it, not only does the drama feature a superb trio of leads (I’ve been a big fan of Zhang Ruo Nan since her performance in The First Frost and Love in Pavilion, and Alen Feng can do no wrong since the underrated The Longest Promise), it also has a world-class director and screenwriter.

They are Liu Hong Yuan, who masterfully directed the almost cult classic Reset, and writer Wu Tong, who doesn’t write huge numbers of scripts but, when she does, they are always exceptional.
Case in point, her critically-acclaimed drama Battle of Changsha and The Story of Ming Lan.
Those two alone, along with the superb cast that includes amazing veteran actors like Yue Yang (Guardians of Dafeng), Xiu Qing (Love Beyond the Grave), Jiang Zhen Hao (A Moment But Forever), Yan Jie (Love of the Divine Tree), and Zhao Zi Qi (Unveil: Jadewind) are enough for me to rate this a ‘must watch’.
As for its plot, its one of those “a group of people get together, become great friends and do some very cool things” I always think the Chinese do very well.
In the case of Zhan Zhao Adventures, these are the people who suddenly become besties:
Based on the classic novel *The Three Heroes and Five Gallants*, this drama innovatively reconstructs the story from the perspective of Zhan Zhao, the “Southern Hero.”
It tells the story of Zhan Zhao (Yang Yang), a highly skilled, upright, and selfless fourth-rank imperial bodyguard, who, after receiving evidence of a mysterious case left by an old friend, sets out alone to investigate.
However, he encounters attacks from various forces and, along the way, meets Huo Linglong (Zhang Ruo Nan), the young lady of Linglong Manor, and Bai Yutang (Fang Yi Lun aka Alen Fang), nicknamed “White-haired Rat.”
The three like-minded individuals, after numerous life-and-death experiences, gradually approach the truth of the matter.
To me, after becoming obsessed with dramas like The Wanted Detective, A League of Nobleman and, to some extent, The Imperial Coroner, if it didn’t have that can’t-act FL, this one sounds like it will have a similar atmosphere?
Four more days to go then before we see where Zhan Zhao Adventures ends up streaming other than Disney+ and Viki, and if Yang Yang can deliver as cool of a performance as he turned in for The Immortal Ascension.
Considering he has not disappointed in dramas like Who Rules the World and The King’s Avatar, and that he’s not one of those Chinese actors who seems to enjoy his fans becoming oversaturated with his presence by starring in four dramas a year (which, I’m sorry, but I get bored with any actor who takes every part offered as I’ve noticed the quality of their performances diminishes fast), there’s no reason to think he won’t be kickass in this one as well.
And now I’m excited to see what kind of chemistry Yang Yang, Alen Fang and Zhang Ruo Nan create together, aren’t you?
