Allen Ren’s ‘Silent Tides’ premiering this month? – Release of character stills suggests its coming soon

The 9 new Silent Tides character stills are visually stunning

The Allen Ren-led historical war-themed thriller Silent Tides is rumored to be getting a December 8th premiere date on iQIYI worldwide (nothing confirmed yet), with a very nice set of character stills being released for the C-drama today possibly in anticipation of that event?

Those nine Silent Tides character stills include shots of Allen Ren, along with more of his co-star Lan Ying Ying, and supporting cast members like Li Chun, Tan Kai, and Ma Qi Yue.

iQIYI also gave us a hint about the World War II plot with this:

In Macau amidst the chaos of war, no one can remain unscathed. In this story of resilience and legend, it is the courage of ordinary people and the perseverance of a great era. Unyielding spirit, united with the nation.

What is that Silent Tides plot about?

Titled 风与潮 or Wind and Tide in Chinese (a better title once you know its plot, in my opinion), Silent Tides takes place after the 1941 fall of Hong Kong to the Japanese.

iQIYI describes the thriller’s complicated but fascinating plot in this manner:

After Hong Kong falls in December 1941, Macau becomes an important port for the transit and exchange of strategic materials among various countries, as well as an international intelligence center, suddenly thrust into the spotlight. The Portuguese administration in Macau claims to be “neutral,” but in reality allows the Japanese agent agency led by Ze Rongzuo to run rampant.

He Xian (played by Ren Jia Lun — aka Allen Ren), a small silver-shop owner, relocates his entire family to Macau and unexpectedly becomes entangled in unforeseen underworld and political turmoil.

During this time, He Xian meets the patriotic young woman Qiao Yinwan (played by Lan Yingying). With the encouragement and support of his wife Guo Qiwen (played by Li Chun), he joins hands with our Party’s Macau-stationed agent Ke Lin (played by Tan Kai), patriotic Chinese merchant Ma Manqi (played by Ma Qiyue), and other devoted patriots.

With a strong sense of patriotism and responsibility, they unite their compatriots, rallying the strength of Macau’s Chinese organizations such as the Chinese Chamber of Commerce, Kiang Wu Hospital, and Tung Sin Tong to resist with all their might, engaging hostile forces in a series of hidden financial and trade battles of wits and courage.

In moments of crisis, they realize that only the Communist Party of China can save China and bring new hope to the Chinese nation. Macau’s patriotic Chinese and the Communist Party of China stand together, confronting Japanese invaders across multiple fronts—including financial warfare, intelligence warfare, and material-supply warfare—achieving one significant victory after another.

The anti-Japanese salvation movement in Macau not only helps the people of Macau survive one of the most difficult “storm” periods in the city’s history, but also raises large quantities of wartime supplies and funds, making an important contribution to supporting China’s overall War of Resistance and the global fight against fascism.

Sure, Silent Tides is somewhat of a propaganda drama for the CCP, but that’s pretty normal with much of what comes out of China when it comes to recent history-based dramas.

Not that that bothers me anyway as I have nothing against the CCP. Plus, let’s face it, just about every drama/film based on history from just about every country is “propaganda” to some extent, isn’t it?.

As someone who is fascinated by this period of modern history in Asia too, and who was always taught growing up in the UK how brutal the Japanese were to the Chinese during World War II, Silent Tides will be a must watch, as it will be interesting to the historical events from the Chinese perspective.

And, by the way, from the new Silent Tides stills, and from the trailer released a couple of months ago (watch below), the cinematography looks gorgeous in this.

It also looks like it will be action-packed and pretty gripping.

As for that supposed December 8th premiere date for Silent Tides, from what I hear, it sounds like an almost rock-solid done deal, but we will let you know categorically as soon as iQIYI announces it.

(Update: While Silent Tides was originally scheduled for a release on December 8th, iQIYI has just announced it has been postponed – until December 9th. So, only a 24 hour wait then, eh?)

By the way, this is the first drama to be released from Allen Ren’s own studio, so let’s give him some love when it does, eh?

Also, if you’re desperate for an Allen Ren injection in your veins, The Demon Hunter’s Romance is one I can definitely recommend.
